At ARRC, we’re developing one of the world’s first planned waste management and energy precincts – designed from the ground up to achieve the very best circular economy outcomes.
Why is this so important?
In the past – both in Australia and globally – recycling facilities have typically operated in isolation. A facility that recycles glass bottles might be located hundreds of kilometres from one that processes plastics, organics or residual waste. These facilities are also often owned by different companies, with little incentive to collaborate.
This separation comes at a cost. Waste must be transported long distances between sites, increasing fuel use, emissions and overall logistic costs – costs that are ultimately passed on to ratepayers.
Fragmentation also limits innovation. Valuable materials are lost because systems aren’t designed to work together. For example, components like metal springs in mattresses can end up in landfill instead of being recovered.
It makes it harder to achieve a true circular economy – where waste generated regionally is transformed into products that can be reused regionally. That might be energy to power homes and businesses, compost for gardens and streetscapes, or recycled glass used to remanufacture new products.
Bringing all the different “streams” in one planned precinct means ARRC can better explore new resource recovery opportunities while diverting waste from landfill. That’s why our precinct will truly be world-leading.
ARRC will include ARRC Organics, ARRC Recycling, ARRC Energy as well as ARRC Innovation, ARRC Hub and ARRC Hydrogen.
Where to find us
ARRC’s precinct will be located on City-owned land within Stapylton’s industrial zone. ARRC Organics is located nearby at Yatala. Both are located within the Yatala–Stapylton Enterprise Area – a premium industrial area identified for recycling enterprises – that is centrally located between Brisbane and the Gold Coast with strong transport connectivity with the Pacific Motorway (M1), Logan Motorway (M6) and the future Coomera Connector.
